• <H4> Hetzner is offering a new product called "Storage Box". This is a cheap disk space that can be accessed over Samba/CIFS, FTP, FTPs, SCP, HTTPs, WebDAV. The main advantages are that it's cheap and fast (local network inside Hetzner). The main disadvantage - is that it's missing NFS support. The idea to start this project came from a thread in WHT where user ryanwls asked for exactly this functionality so he can use the cheap Storage Boxes as a disk drive in his vSphere server.

• <H3> What's the purpose of this project?
• <H4> This project was created to offer NFS (Network File System) support for Hetzner Storage Boxes. You can do it yourself and I strongly recommend you to do so (as a learning experience), but if you lack the knowledge or time, just sign up and use me.
• <H3> How does it work?
• <H4> There are 2 options to setup this project for you. 1) you sign up for a Hetzner account, buy a Storage Box and then share the Samba/CIFS credentials with me. 2) we order the Storage Box from Hetzner and charge you for it. The price we pay is the price we'll charge you for it. When the above is done and the Samba/CIFS account was setup on our server, I will create (manually for now) an encrypted file that will be exported as a NFS share.
• <H3> Can I mount it from the Internet or only inside Hetzner?
• <H4> Only inside Hetzner without VPN support. For external mounts, we're offering a free VPN service as well, because the NFS traffic is not encrypted and authentication is done based on the source IP address.
• <H3> Is it reliable?
• <H4> This is a beta project. This project has a known single point of failure (the NFS server)... maybe even the Samba Server from Hetzner is a single point of failure. At the moment of writing this FAQ page, there isn't any SLA or Availability percentage mentioned on the Hetzner page. Please consider this twice before signing up. I am trying my best to keep the NFS server up and running (I'm using a HW RAID-1 as local storage, but there's only one disk controller, one cpu, one motherboard, one network card). If you require 100% availability, this project is not for you.
• <H3> What are the costs?
• <H4> On top of the Storage Box charged by Hetzner, there's a one time setup fee - $10, which will be removed once everything is automated, and a monthly maintenance fee - $10, which will cover the costs for the NFS server. Each NFS server can handle 1gbps and I decided to not setup more than 5 customers on each NFS server. So the math goes: 45 euro / 5 customers per server ~= $10 / month.
• <H3> What is the performance?
• <H4> I did 2 tests. 1) From my home, 10 mbps connection speed, I was able to max out the network. 2) From a different server located in Hetzner DC, I was getting a variable speed between 200-850mbps. While the resources on the NFS server were consistent, I believe the Storage Box offered by Hetzner doesn't have a linear performance. You have to decide if this is enough for your projects or not.
